Desertec. Isn't the sun in the desert ? Print E-mail
 Desertec

A long-term project which would resolve a part of the European Energy problems .

Club of Rome,  well-known politicians and scientists believe in it but there is still  a long way to go...

Monday, 4 :00 PM.

Esslingen is welcoming us under the sun. A small city a few kilometers from Stuttgart.

A very different appointment is taken with Michael Straub  active member of the TREC.

The TREC is a long term planning and lobbying non governmental organization for an innovative and huge concept called  DESERTEC. The whole is under the Club of Rome which had sound the alarm about the climate warning in the 70's.

Objective :To garantee the energy security of Europe, North Africa and Middle East through an electrical networkconnecting these different parts of the globe and in producing a major part of the electricity in Nothern Africa thanks to the concentrated thermal solar. (cf.Andasol 1 article).

A project mixing industrial and scientific policies where the figures are unrivalled for most of us.

Here are diagrams which demonstrate the huge energy opportunity the TREC wants to promote.

 Desertec

Here is the DESERTEC network the TREC members would love to see.

All the connexions between the different points use the CCHT (High Tension Direct Current) which allows a minor loss of  3% of the electricity transported every 1000 km (approximately 10 times less than the classical technologies used today) but still expensive. So  already exist between several places of the globe.

We can notice the importance that would take the solar energy (yellows points).

 Desertec

These 3 squares, from the smallest to the biggest represent the necessary area to produce the whole electricity for:

Ø      countries of the  Middle East

Ø      Europe

Ø      the world

This project can appear as a mad one, one has to be careful, one will never concentrate as much production at the same place. But that gives a good idea of the solar potential at the world level.

 Desertec

The project will combine energy and desalinization of the sea water thanks to the heat produced by the solar station. This map shows a real long term water need for the contries of North Africa and the Middle East.

Hésites pas si t'as d'autres questions
