Expedito Parenque, 78 years old,  we heard about him before arriving in Brazil. He was very hard to reach, we finally had an appointment with Expedito Junior, the son of his Dad !!!Il  35 years old,  is one of the 3 investors of the company, speaks perfectly French after having worked 2 years at Atofina in the Havre.

The only  way for us to meet him was during a dinner 5 hours away from Sao Paulo.

We share our dinner with 3 engineers of Tecbio who work on a project in Piracicaba, the company headquarter being 3000 Kms in the north !

Their job ?

Manufacturing factories which will transform oil into biodiesel (ed :diesel coming from plants)

Brazil is known for its alcohol which can be mixed with petrol. This is normal, there is here almost no car running with gazole! But the hundred of thousands of trucks which cross this huge country of course use diesel ! The market is enormous ! 200 Millions of Euros invested in new factories and 420 Millions of liters  produced since the beginning of the year.

The impetus comes from a  new Lula policy on the subject since 2005 :In Brazil, before the end of 2008, 3% of biodiesel will have to br mixed in the traditional diesel. 5% in 2010. 

«Today, Expedito explains, 6 to 9 months are necessary to manufacture a biodiesel factory. However, 3 years are necessary to change of raw materials (plants),that is why today in Brazil, 90% of raw materials for the biodiesel industry comes from soya (the law in favor of biodiesel manufacture exists since the end of 2005).That is not optimal at all ! Soya is above all a protein which is to be kept to feed the population! » 

«We have to change our supplying and use Jatropha fore example (very easy to cultivate in the North Easth and the West Center of Brazil) Expedito adds. But the Brazilian law is difficult to change very quickly! But the main raw material used as supplying is still soya ;  it should be balanced in the middle of 2009 !

 60% of the Brazilian Biodiesel factories  were manufactured by Tecbio, they are number one in South America.

 Tecbio is developpping BioKerozene business again. 

The father, Expedito, is in the business for 30 years. 

He is the first having made a propeller plane fly in 1984 crossing Brazil with 100% of biodiesel on board. It was a technical exploit for the time, made with an Embrahair plane.

The business development was stopped because too expensive, but it started again in 2005!

Thwithe Brazilian company developped a partnership with the giant Boeing in addition to the one with Embrahair.

3 tests are planned with Embrahair in 2009 with a mix BioKerozen/ Kerozen traditional on jet planes …

Produced with Babazu,biokerozene is a true technical and environmental exploit  but it also means many new employments in very poor areas.

 Not yet on the Stock Market and not ready to be, according to Junior, the company is to be followed, they are very much in advance concerning the research on BioKerozene in the world. Paris-New York thanks to oil plants in 2050 ?! 

Attention, it is important to keep things in perspective: At the current rythm of the planes, a mix 100% biokerozen if it would be possible, should be supplied by  much bigger farmable areas. Biokerozen is not THE  solution but one of them.
