It is in a Pekinese Starbucks that we meet Peggy Liu to get details about a program we liked very much the first time we saw it on the web.
A training course for the Chinese mayors. To really understand the importance of China (and already evident !) and of its development in the world, here are some figures we found in a McKinsey report : The population of the cities will grow from 567 millions (2005) to 926 millions in 2025. In 20 years, China will so add 300 millions personnes in its cities. More than the whole population of the United States ! Another amazing figure. In 2025, there will be 215 cities of more than 1 million of inhabitants and 35 in Europe ! Ther will also be 25 cities of more than 5 millions of inhabitants… One can quickly understand the importance of the cities and thus of the mayors in China. Since1983, the governement developped a centre for continuing education for the new Chinese mayors.Classes about administration, éducation, research, urbanization… are on the program for a long time. But in 2009, thanks to Peggy, the training classes about urbanization and the environmental issues will be reinforced. Based on best practices of cities around the world, the future Chinese mayors will have to improve their knowledge on one of the most important sujects of the 21st century. Pollution, transportation, habitations, energy effectivness, parklands aso… Everything is studied while always taking in example similar cities (population, size, problems…) which suceeded in finding solution thanks to appropriate policies. Ladies and Gentlemen, mayors of Chinese cities… go ahead !
