The steel industry at the service of the city.. Print E-mail
 SSAB

Or how a steel factory can heat 10 000 inhabitants…

Welcome at SSAB in Borlange in Sweden…

Is it cold? NO it is hot!

Meeting Tuesday March 11th at 9:00 AM  at Borlange Energi lthe company managing all the services of the city (water, waste, energy, telecommunication,  road maintenance…).

The road was long from Copenhaguen but splendid. Forests as far as the eye can see, heavenly lakes.

The eye a little bit tired, we start a big day.

On the program : a station of biogas production,a factory of sewage treatments, a steel factory and a company of ultimate processing waste.

We wanted to let you know here  a good example of synergy between a city and its industrials.

SSAB fmanufactures steel rollers of high quality bound for car and building industry.

3 millions tons of steel are produced here for a  2,3 TWh  per year consumption(corresponding to the annual consumption of household units). A big thing, as one can say !

Reminder :Warm water circuits providing the heating of all the household units do exist in Scandinavian countries such as in other countries (Austria, Germany, Netherlands), It is a big warm water network  covering the city until each dwelling. Then a thermic changer is transfering the heat into the internal heating network of the apartments. Particular to these countries, this system works perfectly and for a very long time.

During the process of steel manufacture, a huge quantity of heat is produced and thus lost. The idea of SSAB and of the city of Borlange was to use this "free" heat to heat the warm water network of the city.

So, 20% of the heating needs of Borlange corresponding to the needs of  10 000 inhabitants are covered by the steel factory SSAB.

It is as much of saved energy and money !

Other actions lead by Borlange Energi :

  • A team of 8 people is covering the region every day to advise private individuals and companies on the ways of saving energy.
  • The biogas station produces all the electricty necessary to the city sewage treatments factory.
  • The dustbins have all a bar code allowing thus to weighall the waste related to each dwelling. So, the private individual is only paying according to his produced waste.
  • An exemplary program« waste to energy » producing electricity from waste.
